A new class is being offered for the first time this September at the University of Saskatchewan, entitled Marketing for Pharmacists. In the course students will learn the finer details of marketing and how to apply it in practice. The major project in the course requires student groups (~2-4 students) to work directly with practitioners who are looking to create a marketing plan to better reach a target audience. This can be for a specific service beginning to be offered, such as pain management, or a marketing plan for a pharmacy, pharmacy department, or even for a consultant pharmacist.
What would be required of the practitioner is to meet with the students in a manner that works best for the practitioner - such as face-to-face, over the phone, or using Skype. The number of meetings, and as a result time commitment, between the practitioner and students would depend on each plan.
Completed marketing plans will be available to the practitioner, students however are not liable for any outcomes as a result of the plan. This project is aimed at engaging students in 'real life' practice, and to form a mutually beneficial connection between practitioners and the College.
Please note that suggesting a plan idea does not guarantee that a student group will pick one as the choice ultimately rests with the students as this is part of their course requirements/grades.
Another marketing opportunity for businesses to consider is the 3rd year pharmacy student Business Plan that is a part of the requirements for the Management in Pharmacy course. The culmination of the course involves each student group 'pitch' their plan in a ten-minute presentation to a panel of judges. The competition tentatively scheduled for Thursday March 29th, 2012 in Saskatoon. The winning group is awarded prizes from various sponsors.
